Very disappointing. The bar and tables are dirty with a horrible smell throughout the area. Sunday lunch was a disappointing and expensive experience with frozen vegetables.
Please tidy up this great building
Have been coming here on and off for 4 years now. Food is "okay" but not particularly exciting - not much choice and on the last two occasions I've been several members of the group have found fault (food barely hot, portion size not great considering the price). The staff are also quite snappy and offhand, and have normally felt as if I have been a distraction to their day by daring to order food/drink at the bar. The tables tend to be sticky and full of the previous occupants lunch. Worth going for the view and the novelty but not for much else.
I am somewhat biased when it comes to The Marsden Grotto, simply because it is my local and I have spent many happy occasions here. Besides the stunning setting and unusual nature of the pub, the place is packed with a sense of history and atmosphere that you will struggle to find anywhere else in the UK.
Sadly though I have to agree with the above review with regards to the staff, hence I witheld a full 5 star rating. I think if they were my staff I'd be giving them a course in customer service. I realise it's a hectic and busy bar in peak season, but having worked in bars and shops myself as a student, a smile and a bit of polite courtesy go a long way towards representing the business and even further to make your customers want to come back. You may have a 5 star venue and food, but it is sorely let down by service.
That said I refuse to allow the staff to put me off!

the oyster bar is brilliant, went there a while back and it was great, the best oysters i'd had for a long time.
